This research paper, written by Breaking Down Plastics ambassadors Maria Carolina Xavier de Almeida and Fabrício Pacheco da Costa, examines the development of and issues concerning public sanitation in the region of Goiás, Brazil, post second industrial revolution.
In 2020, the Brazilian Senate passed a bill to allow the privatization of water and sanitation firms, both of which are currently state run. Sponsors of the bill said that 35 million Brazilians still lack access to safe drinking water, and that approximately half the country's sewage is dumped raw and untreated.
